Energy

Energy

Our Smart Energy project is developing technologies to actively manage electricity demand across Scilly's 5 inhabited islands. This innovative scheme will unlock the potential for the islands to meet more of their own energy demands and will serve as a model for the rest of the UK and beyond.

The absence of mains gas and high cost of other fuels means that the Isles of Scilly have the highest per household electricity consumption in the UK, just above Shetland and Orkney. A key aim of Smart Islands is to reduce energy bills for residents and businesses.

Waste

Waste

Waste handling on Scilly has been transformed in recent years, but disposal remains a problem for such an isolated island community. The smart islands programme will enable new methods of waste disposal that generate energy, reduce costs and reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal.

Water

Water

Despite being surrounded by ocean, drinking water is expensive and energy intensive to deliver on the Isles of Scilly. Dealing with sewage is equally challenging due to the sensitive nature of the unspoiled and highly protected coastline. Through sewage collection, renewables and energy balancing, the smart islands programme is seeking a sustainable approach to water needs.
